Bursa (formerly known as Brusa) lies directly south from Istanbul across the Marmara Sea. Bursa is a major city located on the far western extension of the famous Silk Road and was the capital of Ottoman Empire in the 14th and 15th centuries. The city is now known for its silk manufacturing, the mausoleums of Ottoman sultans, as a centre for processing the marble mined and olives grown in the local area and for its ski resorts on Uludag (Mt Olympus). The city is also famous among Turkish people for the Iskender kebap, a favourite food of Alexander the Great.
